The opening of Rotterdam – The Hague Airport
Opening of Rotterdam - The Hague Airport
Rotterdam Airport has had a new name since 10 February: ‘Rotterdam The Hague Airport’. Adding ‘The Hague’ to the airport’s name is important to the international reputation of the southwestern part of the Netherlands and emphasises the excellent climate for new companies and (government) agencies in the region. The Rotterdam The Hague Airport also serves as the government airport.
In an official ceremony, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam and Mayor Jozias van Aartsen of The Hague signed an agreement with the airport’s management on the new name. The agreement also provides for the creation of a public transport connection between the airport and The Hague.
The name ‘Rotterdam The Hague Airport‘ is written in bold letters on top of the building and appears above the arrivals hall.
Cooperation
The airport’s new name symbolises the extensive cooperation in the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan area. This cooperation should contribute to the business climate and the international character of the region. The presence of a (regional) airport offers an important advantage over comparative regions which lack this facility.
The history of this development dates back to 1921 when the city of The Hague proposed to Rotterdam to build a new airport together. Almost 90 years later Rotterdam The Hague Airport has now been realised.
International
‘The Hague’ was chosen to appear in the new name rather than ‘Den Haag’ because of the international character of the aviation industry as well as the efforts of both in the field of city marketing.
Government flights
Rotterdam Airport has served as the government airport since 1 January 2005 following the closure of the Valkenburg airfield.
International guests of the Dutch government often land at the Rotterdam The Hague Airport. This was the case at the Afghanistan Conference in 2009, as well as during various state visits, meetings and conferences within a European context and many other flights connected to The Hague’s reputation as city of peace and justice.
