National Celebration Chinese New Year in The Hague

On 13 February the national celebration of the Chinese New Year was held in The Hague. It marked the start of the Year of the Tiger, which officially commenced 14 February. The celebration took place in the city hall of The Hague. A program with performances of the traditional dragon- and lion dances, singing and music contributed to the festivities. Speeches by the Chinese ambassador to the Netherlands Mr. Zhang Jun, Mayor City of The Hague Mr. Van Aartsen and State Secretary Mr. Heemskerk all talked about the good bilateral relations between China and The Netherlands. After the official celebration, the dragon- and lion dancers made a tour through the centre of The Hague.
A red carpet led the way for visitors from the city hall to the centre of Chinatown were the festivities continued. The whole day was full of activities in Chinatown, welcoming the new year of the Tiger. Tai chi and kung fu artists gave performances and Chinese fireworks could be seen. Around 10.000 visitors were attracted to the city to join the celebrations.
