West Holland is strong in the fields of life sciences – biotech and medical technology. The Leiden Bio Science Park is home to the largest concentration of life sciences activities in The Netherlands, and among the top bioscience parks in Europe. In October 2009, the Leiden Bio Science Park was voted "Best business park of the Netherlands". Pioneering companies such as Centocor, Pharming, Crucell and DSM, numerous academic research centers and new start up companies are producing groundbreaking medicines and innovative medical technology in both Leiden and Delft.  In addition,  Zoetermeer is home to a number of medical technology companies, such as Toshiba, Draeger,  Atos Medical and PharmaPack.

Also in Delft, the Delft University’s department of Biotechnology and its Kluyver Center for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation hold prominent positions in the field of Industrial Biotechnology.  Science Port Holland, a leading innovative science park is an ideal location for industrial biotech innovation and product development due to its strategic partnership with the Delft University of Technology and close proximity to DSM.
